Aussie Christmas Challenge 5/12 - Green

Today's Aussie Christmas Challenge theme is Green. I actually had to search my stash for a long time to find an appropriate polish - I actually don't have any straight up green polishes! I have loads of teals, turquoises, glitters and duochromes, but nothing that is definitively green. So I ended up choosing what I felt was the most appropriate polish on several levels - NerdLacquer The Selfish Green.

I did a quick google search, and it turns out that The Selfish Green is actually a debate on the future of the environment with prominent scientists including David Attenborough and Richard Dawkins. For some reason it never occurred to me that David Attenborough is actually a doctor/scientist - my childhood memory just remembers him as being that animal documentary guy with the incredible voice. The Selfish Green is also a play on the title of Dawkins' book, The Selfish Gene - so I'm not sure which one the polish is actually named after. Today, I have chosen to interpret it in the context of the selfishness that sometimes arises within certain people at Christmas time, as well as the green of jealousy of other people's far more awesome presents (and numerous other connotations like the grinch and whatnot).

NerdLacquer The Selfish Green is an olive green crelly with multi-sized silver and olive-gold hex glitter, green square glitter and shimmering duochrome blue-purple flecks. I had to give my bottle a good shake because all the glitter had sunken to the bottom, but after that I had no trouble getting the glitter on the nail. It needed 3 coats for full opacity, and only one coat of Seche Vite to make it perfectly smooth.

I love the duochrome flecks in this, it makes it so much more unique. This was actually an untried for me so I'm glad I finally got around to wearing it!

P.S. I have solved the lack of green polish dilemma by doing a massive shop of green Essies on Ozsale.

Nerd Lacquer Pinin' for the Fjords

Nerd Lacquer is a delightful indie brand created by Amanda, who a couple of months ago just disappeared without a trace :( Luckily I managed to grab a bunch of these beautiful crelly (cream-jelly finish) polishes in her last sale, and I am so grateful because they are to die for! Every Nerd Lacquer is so unique and full of depth, and to top it off all the names are nerd-themed! Seriously, even if the polishes were fugly I'd just buy them for the names.

Here is my favourite out of my collection, Pinin' for the Fjords. Every time I look at my nails when I'm wearing this I hear a voice in my head saying "Pinin' for the fjords? Pinin' for the fjoooords??" This polish is so complex I can't even begin to describe what's in it. It's a dusty, pale periwinkle-lavender, packed full of multi-sized silver, blue and dark purple glitter, and a ton of silver microglitter. The crelly finish allows it to be built up to full opacity in 3 coats, while allowing the glitters in all the layers to peek through very subtly. It applies smoothly, but it does dry a bit bumpy so I used one coat of OPI Top Coat and one coat of SV over the top.

The purple colour of this is slightly lighter and less saturated than my pictures show.

At the moment Nerd Lacquers are only available through swaps, blog sales and ebay. My fingers are crossed that Amanda makes a reappearance someday because I really want to get my hands on some more of these amazing polishes!
