Happy Birthday Pretty Serious!

Today is the first birthday of our beloved home grown Aussie indie brand Pretty Serious! The company has grown in leaps and bounds within the short space of a year. It's become a cult brand the world over, recently being featured in New York Fashion Week and the Lust Have It Eco Box. Pretty Serious is now so successful that Kaz, the owner, was able to quit her day job and run it full time - now if that's not every polish addict's dream, I don't know what is!

To celebrate, Pretty Serious fans are painting the town with multi-coloured glitter with the release of Daphne's Birthday Party. Daphne is the brand mascot, and features on every Pretty Serious polish box. Apparently she's a bit of a party girl too, because she always makes an effort to dress in theme for different collections. Here's a couple of the variations we've seen so far:

Daphne's Birthday Party is a combination of 5 different coloured glitters of the same size, designed to look like sparkly confetti on your nails. The colours are so bright and cheerful, it looks fantastic layered over anything. I decided to layer it in a gradient over Poltergeist Puddle, one of my favourite Pretty Serious polishes. It can also be worn on its own with full opacity in 3 coats.

You can't help but feel like celebrating with this polish on your tips!

And of course, I had to mattify it. It still looks great!

Daphne's Birthday Party is not limited edition, so you can pick this up any time for $9.95 from the Pretty Serious website.

Join me in saying a big happy birthday to Pretty Serious! I can't wait to see what they have planned for the future.

Aussie Nails Monday: Green

Today's Aussie Nails Monday theme is Green. I've only recently started exploring this great, untapped colour range, and I'm pleased to say that I'm really liking it.

I started with a base of American Apparel Army Jacket, a nice military green. I topped this with a gradient of Pretty Serious Liquid Leprechaun. I used the cotton bud method, but I think the base of Liquid Leprechaun is a bit too pigmented, so you can see it's a bit splotchy and not a smooth gradient. I finished it with a coat of OPI Matte Top Coat.

Here are the other girls participating in Aussie Nails Monday:

Pretty Serious Seriously Randoms: The Pink One & Martian Sea

The Seriously Random collection by Pretty Serious all began when Kaz and Ben decided to post a few bottle shots of early versions of some of the polishes in their lineup. They received an overwhelmingly positive response to some of them, so after some more testing, they released two of them as a 'misfits' collection - the Seriously Randoms. (It's also a cute little play on the name of Kaz's blog, Pretty Random.)

The Pink One is a bright neon pink with blue shimmer. I'm not convinced that it works with my skintone, but it's so eye-searingly bright that I can't help but love it. It's highly pigmented so it only needs 2 thin coats for full coverage, but I used 3 in this swatch because I have freakishly visible nail lines. It also dries really quickly and oh so smooth. I debated for a while whether or not to put top coat over it, and in the end I did but it really didn't make a difference.

Apologies for the underexposed photos. This polish is so bright even my fancy SLR camera couldn't handle the colours!

In the words of my boyfriend "It hurts my retinas!"

To be honest, when I first saw Martian Sea in the bottle I wasn't sure if I would like it. The brown base is shifts colour slightly, and in some lights looks like a rich milk chocolate brown, but in others more like a dirty, rusty, brick colour. Kind of like the exact colour of Martian mud (or at least, how I would imagine it to look). This latter colour didn't appeal to me at all, but on the nail it actually looked quite nice due to the colour shifting gold-green-blue shimmer.

This only needed 2 coats for full opacity, and once again dried super smooth and shiny. I actually couldn't get the lid of my top coat open when I did this swatch, so these photos are all without top coat.

Isn't that shimmer in the bottle pretty?

The Seriously Randoms are now available for $9.95 on the Pretty Serious website. In fact, they're having a 20% off sale this easter long weekend, get in there!

St Patrick's Day

Today's Nail Art March Challenge is St Patrick's Day... Because it's St Patrick's Day today! So I tried these four leaf clover nails using Polish and Panda's handy tutorial. They're really easy, even though you wouldn't be able to tell from the wonkiness of my attempt.

For the clover nails, I started with a base of Ulta3 Corsican Rose. I then painted the clovers with Illamasqua Rampage and painted over them with Pretty Serious Blue Gums on Boxing Day. The accent nail is a base of Rampage with a sponged gradient of Blue Gums and OPI Goldeneye. I can't get over the look of Goldeneye when it's sponged!

Illamasqua Rampage is such a perfect polish. It's a really rich dark rainforest green with a perfect 2 coat formula (like all Illamasqua polishes I've tried). But unfortunately it looks like I won't be buying many more Illamasquas anymore! This one took over 2 months to arrive, after we did a group order way back in January. Several weeks later the fiasco with Royal Mail happened, when they started destroying all nail polish to be sent out of the UK. So we didn't hear from Illamasqua for another few weeks as to the status of our order, and we had no idea what was going on with it. Eventually it just arrived on our doorsteps, and to top it all off the address it came from was an Aussie address! The ridiculous thing is that Illamasqua is made in Australia, and yet they've taken the option to ship to Australia off their website, and the prices are jacked up a ridiculous amount at the counters at Myer. This, combined with their terrible customer service and communication, probably means I will not be purchasing any more of their polishes myself. Which is a real shame because I really like them!

Happy St Patrick's Day!

Pretty Serious Christmas Without Snow Collection - Swatches and Review

(I'm having a blog sale, check it out!)

Pretty Serious have just released their Christmas collection for 2012! Based on an Australian Christmas, it's aptly named Christmas Without Snow. All of these polishes are very different to the usual holiday collections we see released around this time of year by brand name and indie labels alike. Despite this, they have still managed to capture the essence of all the unique components of what makes an Australian Christmas truly unique!

Firstly, a mention of the packaging. Pretty Serious polishes are contained in a cute little box with their mascot, Daphne, printed on the side. Recently they have started changing the boxes a little to suit the theme of some collections. Last time they produced holographic green boxes for their Halloween collection, and this time they are holographic red with a Christmas themed print. Daphne has had a makeover too, and is now wearing an adorable Christmas outfit. I love the extra finishing touches that Pretty Serious add to their collections - it makes them seem very polished and it's obvious the amount of care and effort that goes into everything.

L-R: Santa's Sunburn, Blue Gums on Boxing Day, Twinkling Lights, Seasonal Sunset, Hot Summer Nights, Party by the Pool

Now onto the swatches!

Party by the Pool is a turquoise jelly packed with tiny green and blue glitters. It's quite sheer, I used 3 coats, although the VNL is not so visible in real life. Also keep in mind I have extremely white tips. I don't know why, but it's kind of annoying because they're really obvious in photos. As with all jellies, the formula requires a bit of patience to apply but it's nothing too difficult. I think it perfectly captures the effect of sparkling pool water, or even the ocean, because let's face it - if it's summer in Australia you're either by the pool or at the beach!

Santa's Sunburn is a warm toned red with silver micro glitter. Let me just say... Holy One-coater, Batman! These photos are all one coat! That's right, just one, super quick drying, glossy coat! In the sun the beautiful golden glow comes out to play. One weird thing about this polish is that when I applied top coat the silver shimmer just disappeared.

Blue Gums on Boxing Day is a perfect eucalyptus green with blue shimmer. For those who don't know, a blue gum, or gum tree, is another word for the native Australian Eucalyptus tree which is basically everywhere. The story goes that when Captain Cook first discovered Australia, he wrote it off as a colonisable country because the twisty Eucalyptus trees were absolutely useless for boat-building. And so it lay, unoccupied (well, except for the native Aborigines whose home it really was), until Britain decided they needed to offload their convicts somewhere really far away where they couldn't get into more trouble. Interestingly, these convicts who came to Australia got a pretty good deal because when they were released, they were given pieces of land which were pretty much "from here to the horizon", just because there was so much freaking land.

But I digress. Blue Gums on Boxing Day is beautiful! The blue shimmer is nice and strong, just the way I like my shimmers. The formula is very easy to work with. It could be opaque in 2 coats but I used 3 here just to be safe.

Hot Summer Nights... I am speechless. What a beauty! A midnight blue with blue and silver glitter suspended through it, this colour is just perfection. It's dark, but doesn't look black. The formula is a little thick but it evens out nicely, and this only needs one coat. I've used two here. It does dry a little dull and gritty so a top coat is recommended, although it also does that weird thing like Santa's Sunburn where the silver glitter disappears. On the other hand, top coat enhances the vibrancy of the blue glitter.

A quick note on the name - I actually hate summer nights here. Apart from the stifling heat which means you have to sleep with no sheets and a fan on, it also means HUGE Christmas beetles! They fly around your windows, continuously bumping into them, crawling all over your fly screens, getting in through the cracks or whenever you open the door, flying around your house, falling into your food, bowls, clothes, handbags, shoes, sink... For the last couple of nights I've had to switch off all the lights in the house and sit in the dark in the bedroom with the curtains drawn, just to avoid the insanity of it all. Then in the morning I have to deal with sweeping up their crunchy dead carcasses, because they all drop dead overnight. Charming .

Seasonal Sunset is a vibrant russet brown with bronze, gold and red particles. The particles are really interesting, I've never seen anything like them before. They're kind of like teeny tine bar glitters. This is going to sound gross but the best way to describe them is that they remind me of the stubble hair my boyfriend leaves in the sink after he shaves. The overall effect reminds me of wood chips in Autumn.  The formula is great, I've used 3 coats here.

Twinkling Lights is a combination of small blue glitter with bigger copper glitter in a clear base. This is definitely a glitter topper as it doesn't get opaque. The formula was a little thick, and I used dabbled coats for the best result. This is 3 coats on its own.

And here is one coat layered over Hot Summer Nights. Stunning!

Another fantastic collection from Pretty Serious. My favourites are Blue Gums on Boxing Day and Hot Summer Nights. I was super excited by the preview photos of Twinkling Lights but in person it doesn't quite live up to my expectations. It's still pretty though. Which ones are your favourites?

The Christmas Without Snow collection is available on the Pretty Serious website for $9.95 each, and you get a 10% discount if you buy the whole set.

P.S. I'm trying out a new style of photographing my nails. I'm trying to pull the camera back a bit so it shows a better idea of what the polish looks like on the hand, if that makes sense. What do you think?

Pretty Serious They Came From Beyond Space! Collection

Yes I know... Another Pretty Serious collection! My wallet is crying. They Came From Beyond Space! is a mini collection of 3 sparkling multichromes which look different depending on how you layer them and in what lighting you look at them. They are such versatile chameleon colours!

With these 3 polishes, the colour is much softer and smoother when worn on its own. It also has more depth to its shimmer. However, when layered over black, the colours really pop and the sparkle is much stronger. They all applied fairly sheer and needed 3 coats for full opacity on their own, but over black only one thick coat (or two thin coats) is needed. The formulas are all really smooth and easy to apply with barely any patchiness or streaking. They have an almost foil-like finish.

Anyway, enough of my talking - I will let the pictures speak for themselves.

Galaxy Invader is an aqua with a light purple shift.

I love all of these, but I think Atomic Brain is my favourite. It's a purple-pink with a golden coppery shift.
