Disney Princess Challenge: Belle

This week's Disney Princess theme is Belle, from Beauty and the Beast. Did you know that Beauty and the Beast was one of the first Disney movies to use CGI extensively? It's particularly noticeable in the ballroom scene, where the entire ballroom is a 3D environment instead of the beautiful hand painted backgrounds that appear throughout the rest of the film.

Did you also know that the animators ran out time during production, so they traced over the dance from the end of Sleeping Beauty? Here's a video showing the two side by side:

I was inspired by Belle's gorgeous yellow dress and the enchanted rose. I haven't tried roses before so I just did a basic one. It was surprisingly easy so I might attempt this again sometime with a proper magical rose.

I'm a day late with this so I had a chance to peek at the other girls' designs before posting this. If you only take a look at one other design, it has to be Lab Muffin's. How amazing is that stained glass rose? Also, her commentary is hilarious.

Disney Princess Challenge: Cinderella

Today's Disney Princess Challenge theme is Cinderella. At last weekend's Aussie Nails meetup the lovely Jen from The Nail Polish Project surprised me with the Sephora exclusive Cinderella collection, which we can't get here in Australia. So obviously, I had to use it for this challenge.

I used a base of So Totally Enchanted, a silvery-blue that matches Cinderella's dress at the ball. The colour of the dress kept changing through the movie though, sometimes it was silver and sometimes it was definitely blue. Weird. The glitter is Step Off, Sister! I really like this combination of blue and silver.

Disney Princess Challenge: Mulan

This week's theme for the Disney Princess Challenge is Mulan. I had to rewatch Mulan last night to find inspiration for this theme, and it reminded me of what a great movie this is, especially in comparison to Aladdin! Mulan is the only Disney princess who doesn't hang around waiting for a prince to save her, and all of her actions in the entire movie are done out of love for her family and wanting to prove herself, rather than chasing some man. Disney princesses are widely trashed as terrible role models for young girls, but I think Mulan is an excellent one.

This mani is inspired by the painted clouds in the opening title sequence of the film.

I will start off by saying that this was a fail on pretty much all levels. I started with a base of China Glaze FYI, a neutral tan with a holographic finish. That was the closest colour to parchment that I own, as I'm not really a neutrals person. To try to emulate the watercolour look, I mixed a couple of drops of black polish with some thinner. This actually worked pretty well, but I don't think I added enough black and the end result was very faint on the nail. So I tried to go over some of the lines, which just looked terrible, and then the entire thing smudged when I applied a matte top coat.

Sorry Mulan, I couldn't do you justice! I might have to try again sometime.

Disney Princess Challenge: Snow White

This week's theme for the Disney Princess Challenge is Snow White. I was never really into Snow White unfortunately... And I struggled to be really inspired for this theme, so my attempt is a bit half-hearted. On the other hand I've been wanting to try this style of dotting for ages so this was the perfect opportunity.

I used Pretty Serious BSOD, OPI Red and Rimmel Lemon Drop. I'm still obsessed with the OPI Matte Top Coat so I couldn't resist mattifying this. I love the smooth look!

Disney Princess Challenge: Jasmine

I'm taking part in another nail art challenge! I love these challenges because they're fun and motivate me to try new things. Sometimes I have trouble with inspiration so these definitely help. It's also exciting to see the designs the other girls come up with on reveal day!

This one is the Disney Princess Nail Art Challenge, put together by Bec from Lacquer Dreams. As a diehard Disney fan, of course I have to take part in this! There was a lot of debate over who the official Disney Princesses are, and why some are included and some aren't (and why everyone is in a pretty poofy dress except for the ethnic girls!), but this is what we will be doing every Saturday for the next 2 months:

Today's theme is Jasmine from Aladdin. I had a set of Disney towels when I was younger (I may or may not still own said towels...) and Jasmine was my favourite. I think it might have been because I related most to her, with her long black hair - kind of in the same way that I preferred the Lion King 2 over the original because the protagonist was a girl. I have no idea why I didn't relate more to Mulan because she's Chinese. I guess I just liked the romance of owning a pet tiger and riding on a flying carpet with a man who's just stumbled across a huge stash of money, rather than pretending to be a man and fighting Mongolians.

I chose to do a taped chevron inspired by her headband. The blue is Sportsgirl Lagoon. I did the accent nail with one coat of Essie Shine of the Times, and OPI Goldeneye sponged in a gradient over the top. I really love the luxe, antique look of these gold flecks, after doing a similar look here.
